22 – 29 October 2023 – Armenia

The Pariahs mobility program began in Armenia where the artistic teams representing each of the partner cities gathered in Yerevan with a goal to meet, co-create, exchange skills and practices, discuss about the research that took place, and integrate new learnings, skills and materials in their performances, while connecting with the local Armenian artists, communities, and cultures.

During their stay in Armenia, a lacemaking co-creation workshop organised with local artists and community members will take place.

The residency scheme began with a week in Armenia, in Yerevan and Ayntab village, where project artists from all partner countries participated in workshops, networking sessions, field trips to get to know the local communities and culture, and meeting local artists.

The first residency programme acted as a means to get to know each other, to share practices, thoughts and ideas about the overall concept of what it means to be a Pariah and how this is perceived in each location. 2 dancers – choreographers, 1 performance artist, 2 literary artists, 2 musicians and 2 visual artists participated in the Armenian residency.

Check out the project artist log from the art residencies!

Pariahs Artist Logs

13 artists in total from all four partner countries – Armenia, France, Greece, Slovenia – travelled to other partner countries to attend an artist mobility programme aiming to network, connect with each other, exchange skills and practices, integrate new learnings, skills and materials in their final artistic outputs and connect with the local communities.
Artists were asked to log their days at the residency, collecting any types of multimedia material as a means of self- documenting their artistic process. Such material could be photos taken with their phones, videos, texts, posters, mages, sounds, excerpts, etc. The logs will be presented digitally and will have the form of audiovisual material.

Day 1, DAILY TRAVEL LOG

Arrival day, exploring Yerevan, meeting each other.

Day 2, DAILY TRAVEL LOG

Introduction of the Armenian memory story. Each team presented their form of art, their representative organisation and some research results, in order to identify commonalities and differences regarding the concept of marginalisation, which would in turn inspire their artistic and creative processes. Researcher Effie Samara presented online a brief of the research results.

Day 3, DAILY TRAVEL LOG

A visit to Ayntab village and the lace factory, meeting local communities of women and young girls.  The Greek artist Katerina Papageorgiou hosted a theatre improv workshop for the artists and the local community in Armenia.

Day 4, DAILY TRAVEL LOG

The Armenian team had organised a needlework workshop in Ayntab, since their research was done with a group of women that worked at a lace factory. The French team hosted a dance co-creation workshop for the artists and local community.

Day 5, DAILY TRAVEL LOG

Artists had a free day to explore local museums and galleries, among which was the Museum of the Armenian genocide. In the afternoon they had the time to work on their own art individually or collectively.

Day 6, DAILY TRAVEL LOG

Meeting with local artists and attending a needlework workshop organised by the Armenian team. In the afternoon, the Slovenian literary artists hosted a literary workshop that included texts gathered from all four countries by marginalised writers. Then, the artists and local participants, identified themes & words that connect all four locations, thus creating the connecting thread for the project.

Day 7, DAILY TRAVEL LOG

Free day to work on artistic creations & reflections.
